Using drama to raise awareness and challenge misconceptions about

asylum seekers and refugees in Hong Kong

While Hong Kong was built with the energy and drive of many refugees, the general

public knows very little about asylum seekers

and refugees in Hong Kong today. Thousands of people from all over

the world fled persecution in their home country and now live here

with us, but who are they? why did they leave? why did they come to

Hong Kong? what is their life like here?

It is unfortunately not easy for refugees to tell their stories. As

they struggle for basic survival and often have to remain in hiding,

they are a vulnerable and invisible community. Theater is the

perfect medium to let their voices be heard without revealing their

identity, nor forcing them to recount their traumatic experiences. A

play based on UK refugee stories has been performed there for more

than a year and proved an invaluable advocacy tool:

We're looking for volunteers to write/produce/direct a production

which will help the local public understand what it means to be a

refugee in Hong Kong today. In order to reach the local Hong Kong

community, the play should be in Cantonese. But if there is enough interest, we could
also have an English or bilingual version.

Hi, Sarah. I remember you. We meet at the seminar about a.s. and refugees before. It's nice to hear from you and your idea looks sound really. But I have just started an evening study now, I afraid I have no time to join it. I will send it to my network. Would you please send it to Davy (HKCI), She will send it to some more people too. Thank you very much for your invitation and info.
